The President of Chad who has also been the chairperson for the African Union since March 2017, Moussa Faki Mahamat said on Monday that he was surprised by the inaction
of the Africans when it comes to famine and drought in some African countries especially South Sudan and Somalia.
Moussa Faki Mahamat made this statement during His address to the Heads of States present at the A.U summit in Addis Ababa.
He said; “In the face of the atrocious tragedy of famine in these regions, what has become of the values of solidarity and African fraternity? Where has our civil society gone? Where have our private sector and our patrons gone?
“The tragedies of our brethren in Somalia, in South Sudan, in the Lake Chad basin and in the Sahel challenge our deepest consciences and to the deepest of our beings,” He said
The chairperson assumed office this year at a time the UN had warned against a risk of malnutrition and starvation for millions of people on the continent.
In the midst of humanitarian crisis, Moussa Faki Mahamat was confident that 2018 will be a year of financial freedom for the African Union.
