The 4-day burial rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Serwaa Kobi Ampem II is scheduled to end today with a burial service to be held in her honour at
Manhyia by Anglican Bishops and fathers led by the Rt Rev Sarfo Kantanka
.
It is after the church service that the chiefs of Asante would take her to the Royal Cemetery or 'banmu' first at Bantama for some rituals and finally to Breman which is the final resting place of all Kings and Queens of Asante Kingdom.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will arrive at the funeral grounds in a palanquin.
The arrival of Otumfuo will be signaled by the arrival of some of his subjects with firing musketeers and others holding the 'tanaa' to clear the way for the King.
The 'tanaa' which is made of palm sticks tied together have fires at their ends. The brief history behind that is that in those dark ages when there was no light, the 'tanaa' was lighted to provide light for the the Asante King and his elders anytime they were making public appearances.
In respect of the age-old tradition, inhabitants of the cosmopolitan city have locked up their shops on the final day of the funeral.
The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia just arrived at the funeral grounds.
The President is in a black cloth (Kuntukuri).
Also present are the first lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Samira Bawumia.
