Africa must stop begging to reclaim it's respect - Dr Bawumia

The Vice President Dr. Bawumia believes Africa deserves a lot of respect from the Western world and this could be made possible if only we stop begging for aid. Bawumia wants the
‘dark continent’ to aim at “economic emancipation” through trade partnerships and cooperation within ourselves instead of relying solely on aid to developing.

The Vice President Dr. Bawumia said; “Africa will only get the respect it deserves from the rest of the world if only we liberate ourselves economically.

We don’t have to take our begging bowls around the world all the time. We should look for investment, cooperation, and partnerships,” Dr. Bawumia made this statement at the Africa Leadership University in Mauritius on the various ways through which we can unlock the leadership potential of the Africa.

He also said education plays a critical role in the development of every nation, therefore, the youth must take advantage of it to save the continent.

Later on Sunday, Bawumia was the Special Guest at a Breakfast Meeting to mark Mauritius’s 49th independence and 25th Republic anniversaries. The two countries signed various agreements at the Government House in Port Louis,  the capital of Mauritius for a stronger partnership.

“You serves as an example for us and we want to learn from you… Our government believes that we should set the best environment for the private sector to invest and it is time for action to be taken… Our economy is based on production and not taxation. This is why the government abolished various taxes,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Government has also signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement with the government of Mauritius.

Both countries have also initiated a Ghana-Mauritius Permanent Joint Commission for  Bilateral Cooperation (GMPJC), as part of a series of measures to enhance trade between the two countries.

The Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, signed this agreement on behalf of the government of Ghana, while the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo also signed on behalf of Mauritius.
