Poor muslim men to be banned from polygamy in Nigeria

Poor muslim men to be banned from polygamy in Nigeria

The Emir of KanoMuhammed Sanusi II, has stated clearly that He has no intentions to quit his planned law that will restrict the practice of polygamy by poor men living in the Nigerian State of Kanoano.

‘‘I will not be backing down from making sure the law against poor men in our society seeking to marry more than one wife be reversed" he said it on Instagram.

The Emir who is the second most influential Muslim leader in Nigeria some weeks back made it known that there was a family law that was meant to restrict the practice of polygamy for men who do not have the resources to cater for an extra wife.

Muhammed Sanusi II also cautioned in his Instagram post that all leaders under the Kano Emirate who will be found beating their wives would be stripped off their titles. ‘‘I have cautioned all the district heads, the village heads, ward heads and all Imams to also refrain from beating their religiously accepted wives and whoever is found to have violated this, would outrightly lose his title.

‘‘Even though the laws were not meant to prevent Muslims from marrying up to 4 wives of their choice, it also regulates how a married man should treat his wives and kids according to the tenets of Islamic religion,’‘ he clarified.

The Emir also affirmed that for people in the largely Muslim north of Nigeria, there was a clear relationship between poverty, polygamy, and terrorism, the main reason that called for the proposed law.

Muhammed Sanusi II also said a sub-committee made up of scholars in the Kano palace had been working for the past 1 year on the bill. A meeting is scheduled on Wednesday to review the over 80 pages of the proposed law and make the needed adjustment before it will be presenting it to the State House of Assembly fot it to be passed to law.
