LESOTHO: Wife of newly elected Prime Minister shot dead ahead of his inauguration
Lesotho’s newly elected Prime Minister Thomas Thabane is reported to have lost His wife through gunshot on Wednesday by
Dipolelo Thabane, 58-year old, was shot together with another woman while driving in through village about 35 kilometers from Lesotho's capital Maseru, the police said.
“I can just confirm to the media that the 58-year old woman was shot dead last night in ‘Masana but it is too early to reveal her identity and to whom she is related to,” The Police Commissioner Mr. Clifford Molefe was quoted by AFP.
Keiso Mohloboli, a famous journalist in the city of Basotho also posted on his official Twitter handle that the prime minister's daughter Advocate Nkoya Thabane has confirmed the shooting of her stepmother Dipolelo Thabane.
The newly elected Prime Minister and wife are reported to have been separated and in a process of getting a divorce.
Thomas Thabane is scheduled to be inaugurated into office as Prime Minister of Lesotho on Friday after his Basotho Convention party took a comfortable lead in the country’s parliamentary election last Tuesday.
They gathered 48 seats out of 120, ahead of PM Pakalitha Mosisili, who only gathered 30 of the seats.
Thomas Thabane, who made a comeback after 2-year in exile, was chased out of the country after a failed military coup in 2014 when he was the Prime Minister.
He then fled to seek refuge in South Africa and briefly returned for parliamentary elections in 2015 where he lost.
